AfriThrive appeal for a new refrigerated truck for food operations

At AfriThrive, we firmly believe that everyone deserves access to culturally appropriate healthy foods. Through our Healthy Food Initiative, we have distributed over a million pounds of nutritious groceries in the Greater Washington DC region, especially during the challenging times of the Covid pandemic.

To continue this vital work, we need your support in obtaining a new cold storage truck. Our current truck has played a crucial role in reaching families and enabling them to save significantly on their grocery bills.

Families attending our food share locations saved an average of $130 per week, amounting to over $6,760 per year.

These savings could cover rent for several months or help with medical bills. The value of these essential services for each family has increased by an astounding 150% over the past three years.

As the summer heat rises, we face a significant challenge. The refrigerator in our old truck is no longer working and the estimate we received for a replacement is over $15,000, exceeding its resale value for a 2000 model. 

We urgently need a cold storage truck to continue our food operations even as the farm produce is ready for gleaning. Without a cold storage truck, we are unable to accept and preserve perishable food for a day, which means that hungry families miss out on much-needed nourishment.
